history of the hawaiian flag
Hawai‘i has seen significant political changes since Kamehameha united the Hawaiian Islands in 1810. One of the few constants is Ka Hae Hawai‘i, the Hawaiian flag. For over 200 years, it has stood as an enduring source of pride for the people of Hawai‘i.
Its time of creation and who designed it has been the subject of much debate. We know it was fashioned sometime between 1806 and 1816 during the reign of Kamehameha. Alexander Adams, an adviser to the King, is widely credited as its designer. This has been disputed by some historians who claim it was an English sea captain named George Beckley.
As a gesture of goodwill, Kamehameha incorporated elements of the British, American, and French flags. There are eight stripes, one for each of the major Hawaiian Islands. In the upper left corner is the Union Jack, which Kamehameha first received as a gift from Captain George Vancouver in 1794.
